A meeting of the Coordination Council on the Affirmation of Ukrainian National and Civic Identity was held in Nizhyn under the Chernihiv Regional State Administration

Deputy City Mayor Serhiy Smaha took part in the meeting. The event brought together representatives of regional and local authorities, educators, employees of cultural institutions and museums, as well as specialists working in this field.

Participants discussed the role of education, culture and historical memory in shaping the national consciousness of young people. They shared experience in using museum practices to study Ukrainian history and foster civic responsibility, and familiarized themselves with the current state of museums in educational institutions of Chernihiv Region.

They also heard information on the implementation of the project of the Ministry of Education and Science (MON) “Historical memory as a factor in forming national identity in Chernihiv Region during the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war”.

They separately heard a report on the experience of national state-building during the time of the Zaporozhian Host as a historical foundation for affirming Ukrainian national and civic identity in Chernihiv Region.

An important block of the meeting was work with war veterans, members of their families and families of the fallen. The discussion covered the experience of veterans’ reintegration, problems in this area, and further directions of work in this field.

The meeting also discussed the protection and development of the Ukrainian language in Chernihiv Region and the main directions of work of the Coordination Council for 2027.

It is important to remember that the formation of Ukrainian identity begins with knowledge of one’s own history, respect for the language, and awareness of shared responsibility for the country’s future. This is a task that requires uniting the efforts of education, culture, the public and the authorities.
